In the scientific world, they call it Anarhichas lupus; others call it ocean catfish, stripped wolf fish, and Atlantic wolf fish. As the name suggests, it is the wolf fish of the sea. They have elongated scale-less bodies, with s its skin being tanned and used in various commercial purposes. Like a wolf, its mouth is full of strong canines and molars, which can crash virtually anything that they come across, include human beings. In color, most have a grey to blue theme on the exterior, with a dozen of dark vertical stripes. The under belly is off-white, with a yellow tinge theme. The fingerlings are tanny brown, with the same dark vertical stripes. Similar to the eel, their fins are long and continuous but do not join with the tail wolf fish.
Most of the wolf fish are found in area of low temperatures, with 30-45 degrees Celsius variations being their favorite. To prevent them from freezing during freeze seasons like winter, they have an antifreeze type three. They prefer deep water of about 300 feet, although most of them can still be found on low 40 feet when they look for food. In geographical location, they can be found on both side of the North Atlantic, with some being along the shores of Massachusetts. Most of the can be seen in the late Novembers to early Mays as it is believed that this is the time when the spawn.
Wolf fish are slow moving fish and will be easy to spot and catch. They prefer feeding on small fishes, lobsters, clams, crabs and mollusks. With their strong molar teeth, they are able to crash these animals easily, as can even swallow the whole thing including the hard shells covering them. You should also note that they are solitary species; hence, you will not be finding them in schools like most other wolf fish types. Most of them are catch accidentally as ‘by-catch’ when fishing from Pollock, cod or haddock. After being hatched, the small ones will make a journey down under, where they will stay and develop until mature enough to take care of themselves.
When fishing for wolf fish, you can use any bait favorable but the most recommended bait is clam, which makes their favorites dishes. If you want more catch, you can use the modified rig that has a bottom dropper loop but still you can have one or two of this using the common Tandem cod rig with a 10-ounce lead sinker. Other artificial baits also work well in drawing this catfish towards you. Commercial fishing for wolf fish is unlikely, considering their rarity in the sea but most people do this for recreational purposes. This wolf fish type is not bothered by a man’s presence, but will react with violence when slightly intimidated. They can kill with the strong molar teeth, which they use for feeding purposes. A season that you will possibly find them in plenty is during summer, a time when their reproductive system is put to work. This is a pure white meat wolf fish, which is a delicious delicate flavor for many.
